According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, if one faucet leaks just 10 drips per minute, it amounts to 14,400 drips per day and more than 347 gallons of water per year. But less is known about what these leaks cost in dollars and cents.
“The cost of [water] leaks can be just staggering,” says Klaus Reichardt, CEO and founder of Waterless Co., manufacturers of waterless urinals and other restroom products. “And, what is almost as amazing is how many facility managers are unaware of just how much money is literally being flushed down the drain.”
Below are some estimated costs of what a commercial facility could expect to pay if it experienced leaks from malfunctioning toilets, faucets, and landscaping fixtures.*
Reichardt suggests that managers conduct facility water audits on a regular basis. “There are several components of a water audit, but one of the most important is to just look for and repair leaky restroom and kitchen fixtures,” he says.
