FORMATIONS™ ACOUSTICAL CLOUDS FROM ARMSTRONG ENHANCE ACOUSTICS WITHOUT SACRIFICING DESIGN

Ideal for open plenum spaces, new system consists of choice of ceiling panels plus kit containing pre-cut suspension system and perimeter trim components

As open plenum spaces continue to grow, so do the noise problems associated with them. To help enhance acoustics in these and other acoustically-challenged spaces without sacrificing design flexibility, Armstrong Ceilings has introduced Formations™ Acoustical Clouds.

The unique new cloud system consists of 2’x 2’ ceiling panels and a separate kit containing all the pre-cut, ready-to-assemble suspension system and perimeter trim components required to create the cloud.

Designed for use in new construction or retrofit applications, Formations features a choice of popular ceiling panel options and a new installation system that uses fewer hanger wires and recesses them to impart a sleeker “floating” look to the cloud.

An ideal way to define spaces in open plenum areas, the easy-to-specify and install clouds are available in squares and rectangles in 2-foot increments ranging from 6’x 6’ to 14’x 14’. Trim profiles are offered in 2”, 4” and 6” heights.

Provide Increased Sound Absorption

Formations Acoustical Clouds provide more sound absorption than a continuous ceiling of the same surface area because sound is absorbed on both the front and back surfaces of the cloud. The more “live” the space, the greater the effect on reverberation time from the addition of clouds.

Armstrong ceiling panels compatible for use in the system include Ultima™ mineral fiber panels, Optima™ fiberglass panels and perforated MetalWorks™ panels. All are available with a tegular or Vector™ edge. The Vector edge features a sleek, ¼” reveal that hides most of the grid.

Formations Acoustical Clouds also offer an improved visual over standard cloud designs because all corners are factory-mitered, and all grid and perimeter trim is pre-cut to size to reduce the number of visual splices. Elimination of field cutting also helps assure better fit and cleaner, more precise joinery.

Fewer Hanger Wires Required

Formations Acoustical Clouds are installed in a standard 15/16” grid system. However, a new system called StrongBack™ reduces the number of hanger wires required and also recesses them two feet back from the perimeter edges, all of which makes the hangers less visible and produces a more dramatic floating cloud appearance. In addition, the hangers are made from aircraft cable instead of traditional wire to impart a sleeker, more finished appearance.

The installation kits are designed exclusively for Formations Acoustical Clouds and contain: Axiom™ perimeter trim cut to length with factory-mitered corners; Axiom StrongBack carrying channel; Prelude™ cut-to-length grid components; Axiom splices and T-bar connectors; and aircraft cable, cut to 10-foot lengths, for attachment to the structure. All Axiom components are made from extruded aluminum for better registration, handleability and finished appearance than cold-rolled steel.
